Foundation is a critical component of any construction activity - be it large or small. Larsen & Toubro Limited, the Indian engineering giant entered the foundation business as early as three decades ago with a small team of engineers, who gave engineering solutions to the various business units of L&T.

In the late 1980s, L&T introduced hydraulic rotary piling rigs. Technology experts from the market, with varied experience in both the domestic and international arenas were recruited and formed the FGEC (Foundation & Geotechnical Engineering Cell), a competency cell which was further strengthened with doctoral experts and academicians with research orientation. These stalwarts undertook various jobs and built a solid knowledge-base and expertise in this field. Realizing that mechanization and automation were the only way forward to create infrastructure on a rapid basis, the role of FGEC was to implement technologies, improve methods, productivity and quality at the worksite.

In 2012, L&T acquired a huge fleet of sophisticated foundation equipment and L&T GeoStructure - a unique legal business entity, was formed to focus, capture and build business across the ground engineering segment. The organization has four main vertical businesses - namely:

  • Piling
  • Embedded retaining structures
  • Marine and riverfront development
  • Microtunneling
  • Ground improvement, Soil investigation and Anchors

The services of a host of horizontal support functions like Finance, HR, Business Development, Resources including P&M, Quality, Safety and ISD were enlisted for the smooth functioning of the organization.

Headquartered in Chennai L&T GeoStructure has project sites all across India and regional cluster offices in the North, South, East and West each with an Operations Head, in charge of the operations of the entire region.
